  2. Women are increasingly required to stay at home and they are losing their intellectual ability because they were not able to learn as rapidly as individuals that were able to leave their homes. This was the role of woman in Islamic history. In the reading, for instance, “Woman of Islam, it speaks of spiritual equality, marriage, divorce, duties and obligations, economic position, and additional traditions of the Holy Prophet. An example of a woman’s power would include the story of A’isha. A’isha was consulted on matters that the prophet had lead (important rituals). These rituals had to be accepted first by A’isha. “God’s apostle said and she quotes, ‘If any of you feels drowsy while praying he should go to bed till his slumber is over because in praying while drowsy one does not know whether one is asking for forgiveness or for a bad thing for oneself.’” Teachings can be found within this quote about how the role of women is continuing.

  4. There is much controversy over women in Islam today. Women are continuously gaining equality with men in the Muslim world, but some areas still treat women as inferior. For example, in Saudi Arabia, women have almost no control over their own lives, the men make the decisions for them. On the other hand, Saudi Arabian women have gained rights politically and in the work force. A stereotype often given to Muslim women is that they are unintelligent. This is extremely false and quite the opposite. The veils that Muslim women wear, which cover their bodies and much of their heads, give many people the impression that they have little rights and intelligence. Some believe that these veils are worn for religious purposes, while some say that they are only worn for culture. The idea that these veils reflect little intelligence and inferiority and can be disproved because women in the Islamic world are slowly being granted more equality rights. In many Muslim countries, women are almost equal with men today. Also, numerous Muslim women are well educated and contain vast amounts of intelligence contrary to popular beliefs. Overall, there are controversial thoughts towards the modern Muslim women, but for the most part they are slowly improving and gaining the rights that they need for complete equality.

  5. The women in Islam have gone through may different phases throughout history. For a long time, women were not supposed to leave their homes or show themselves to other people. Women first came to real importance when they were connected to the prophet. If a woman had a relation with one of the prophets, she had the ability to create and tell some of her stories through the Hadith. Because women had the ability to use the Hadith, we are now able to look at historical happenings from new views and perspectives. Women since then have gained more respect and freedom. In the Quran it even states that humans are created in pairs of two and that neither one is better than the other.
These excerpts have made a great impact on the female role in society and has gained them respect and authority in the Middle East. Instead of making a great impact today, women are constantly undermined and pressured into looking good all of the time just like women around the world are. From reading some articles and watching some video clips about societies in the Middle East I have learned that even though equity is what is emphasized in the Quran, it is not emphasized all over.

  6. Gender equality has been an issue for many years, but one of the most obvious is the issues within the muslim culture. Within the muslim culture there are many controversial rules/laws regarding women. Many people women were not allowed to show their face or leave the house. Another issue was the headdresses that the women are often required to wear because many people automatically assume that the women are unintelligent. However, one of the most important books in the Islam religion, the Hadith, was written by female relatives of the Prophet Muhammad. So believe that it is important to be aware of the fact that women do play important roles in some parts of the Islam religion.

  7. There is a lot of talk about Islamic women and their rights. Historically, women have been strong and powerful and there have been multiple accounts of women warriors. Muhammed also had wives and would confide in them as he would have a man. The Quran talks about how women and men are created from the same being and therefore are equal. However, it also talks about how men should protect and take care of women. Over the years this has turned into obedience towards a man and in some countries women have taken the form of property. The West as a whole is very different in these areas and does not share the same views of women. The West may sometimes believe that Islamic women are unintelligent or are contempt with their place in society but this is not true. They are slowly gaining their rights and moving up in society. Overall, the status of women have gone from heroes to slaves, but it is slowly creeping back up to equality between the men and women in the Islamic world.

  8. There is an abundant amount of controversy over the role of women in Islam due to incorrect stereotypes. First of all, many westerners perceive the women of Islam as being controlled by men and not being smart enough to make their own decisions. This misconception is mostly based on the head dresses that they wear that cover most of their bodies. Contrary to the popular belief, the women are not forced to wear the coverings, but rather make a personal choice of whether or not they feel more comfortable wearing it. Women are also very important in the history of society because they first became included in Islam by being married to or companions of prophets. Then, they could write stories in the Hadith and convey their messages and feelings. Women are also treated equally as men, however they obtain different jobs in their culture. The Quran states that men and women depend on each other because woman were created from men, so they find comfort in the presence of one another.

  9. The women of Islam have stirred much controversy over the years with their religious rules and regulations. The male gender in the Islamic faith, definitely plays a more dominant role. Women are noted for being unintelligent and unable to complete tasks as well as the men. However we all know that this fact is a faith-driven opinion regarding the Islamic men. Because women are noted as inferior they are forced to wear an article of clothing that covers their faces as they leave their houses. Although, In present day we now see that many Muslim women are gaining more rights and independence. It is wrong to say that that these women have no rights, however to the outsider it does appear this way. As the years progress, Muslim women will have many more rights, and they will be placed on an equal scale.

  10. Today, there are many different viewpoints on how the women of Islam stand. There is controversy over the role of women because people are not often aware of the actual role of women in Islam in the past and present, and so people’s perspective of Islamic women clash. To begin with, many people believe that men possess all of the power and women possess none of it. This statement, however, is false. While it is true that some Islamic women are nothing more than slaves of their husbands, most actually make their own choices and are content with how they live. For example, their religion mandates that they wear the hijab, and as most Islamic women strictly follow their religion, they wear these headdresses without a second thought. Also, the tradition of the Islamic culture calls for women to remain at home as opposed to the men, but this does not mean that the women are silenced. The women are in charge of raising the children and providing sound advice to their husbands, and examples of this can be traced all the way back to the wives of early prophets. In fact, women in Islam had many more rights way before Jewish or Christian women did. In conclusion, there is controversy of the role of women because of the many distorted viewpoints that people have towards women.

  11. Women in the Muslim sulture are becoming more and more discriminated against. They are told to stay wihtin the household. If they are to leave the house, they are told that they must be completely covered in clothing. If any of their skins shows, they could be executed. Although they Qu'ran does not actually say this, women are still looked down upon greatly for showing any skin. They are also not able to be educated as much as men. They are also not represented in the work force as much as men.

  12. Muslim women have complicated roles in their society, so there is much confusion and argument about this topic. Some people, especially Westerners, believe that these women are severely oppressed, a stereotype that is due to the media, but the Quran emphasizes that women are spiritually and fundamentally equal to men, and their history shows that Muslim women had more authority than women of any other religion or society. However, it also states that women should dress “modestly,” which is part of the reason for the hijabs that many Muslim women wear, but Islam does not dictate that women should cover their entire bodies (burqas), which is a common misconception. Hijabs and burqas have become a type of cultural tradition and are even considered in fashion.

  13. Undoubtedly, there is huge controversy of women in Islam and the Arab world today. One major misconception held by Westerners is that Muslim women are powerless, subjugated slaves to their husbands. While some Muslim women are indeed treated this way, a large majority of them are not; Muslim women are just as intelligent, powerful, and passionate as their Western counterparts. This damaging and degrading stereotype is often given to us through the media, but it could be farther from the truth. Women possessed many more rights than Christian or Jewish women in classical times and often dictated how their families were to be operated. While the hijab--the body covering that hides the hair and ears of women but reveals the face--is considered to be a tool used in degrading women, many claim that is merely a cultural choice, not a mandated practice. These women follow the Koran, Islam's holy book, which tells them to dress modestly. It is the countries these women live in (in Jordan, women are allowed to wear merely hijabs; in Saudi Arabia, they are forced to wear full body coverings known as burqas) that mandate dress codes, not Islam itself. Another major misconception of Muslim women is that they do not hold any power. Rather, A'isha, one of Prophet Mohamed's wives, wrote many Hadiths which are teachings and spiritual rules regarding the Koran. In all, Western stereotypes presented by the media cause such controversy over women in Islam.
