Myanmar Reflection
The current conflict between democracy and communism in Myanmar has its roots in the Japanese nationalists that exerted influence over Myanmar and formed a socialist government that eventually evolved into the “Burmese way toward socialism” mentioned in Step 1. From the beginning, there were ethnic groups like the Karens that protested communism in Myanmar, and the government has a history of quieting those who support a democratic government, such as Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, the government is not officially military, but it still has “military backing.” In short, true democracy has yet to settle in Myanmar.

Myanmar Case Study Reflection Reflection
The people of Myanmar are struggling to end the military government and
start a free democracy. There have been protests such as the one in
1988 lead by the '88 Generation Students Group, but most of the protests
including this one were ended by harsh military action. This internal
struggle in Myanmar could cause an issue to the global community because
with an unstable government, the country cannot properly function and
therefore it is difficult for other countries to do business with,
travel to, or have any relations with Myanmar.
Myanmar Case Study Reflection
After watching the videos about Myanmar, I have noticed that the country is not able to organize a type of government in which the people are able to decide. Groups have gotten together in protest trying to fight for a democracy. Many times the Burmese government uses violence to end these protests, making the cause for a democracy much stronger. Hopefully, the people and government of Myanmar can someday come together and negotiate with one another instead of using violence and causing more pain and rebellion.
Myanmar
Myanmar is a developing country. It used to be run by the military and called Burma. The old military leaders aren't completely gone though. They still are lurking "behind the scenes." They have started building a museum to commemorate themselves. There are many poverty-stricken people in the capital and the whole country. They have come a long way in Myanmar and I'm sure they will continue to develop.
Myanmar: On the Road to Democracy?
After watching the videos, reflect on the status of Myanmar. Specifically, based on the videos what is the current situation in Myanmar and why is this issue of concern to the global community?
Myanmar Case Study Reflection
After watching the four videos about Myanmar, I found that this country is still developing and recovering in many ways from its former military rule. Formerly, the country was called Burma, and had a strict military government that kept any form of protest to a minimum with violence, as seen in the "Crackdown" video. The current leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was locked up for almost twenty years because she was an activist for democracy and advocated for the removal of the military rule. She was elected in the first democratic election in Myanmar since the beginning of the military rule, and hopes to help the country recover from its devastating past.

Current Events Magazine
My magazine talks about current events around the globe. There are eight articles that talk about a variety of things. One article talks about how one university in Xinjiang was requiring the students to have their political views approved by the university. Other articles talk about conflict in Libya or China. Another article talks about a man being sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over the attack on the U.S. consulate in 2004. Yet another article talks about a russian military advisor who was shot and killed in Yemen. There is an article that talks about Pope Francis and how he wants to "decentralize" the power of the church. the final article talks about how Facebook recognized a former part of Serbia as its own country.

Current Events
I found Flip board to be a great way to get news and current events that can be personalized to what you want. My magazine includes many different articles about current events, some things that my articles talk about are wars between the Libya army and militia and also other problems that are present in places like the Middle East right now. It is common to find articles about this kind of information right now because it is always in the news now. I found another article that talks about a Russian military adviser who was shot dead in Yemeni. From this article I discovered a trend that was common about most of the articles and that was most of them focus on negative things like violence, it was very difficult to find an article that showed positive events because I guess that is not what appeals to the people. Most of the rest of my articles are about the Middle East and other violence as well. I enjoyed using Flip board and thought that it was a great way to get news easily.

My magazine contains 14 world news articles. They relate to many of the regions that we've studied, like Africa, Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. I found many examples of protests against government while I was searching for articles, such as those in Thailand and Honduras. Another interesting article was one about China planning to send an unmanned probe to the moon for the first time. Overall, my magazine has at least one article for most of the major issues today.

TED Talks Video Notes and Summaries
http://www.ted.com/talks/dambisa_moyo_is_china_the_new_idol_for_emerging_economies.html
The first video that I watched was about the emerging Chinese economy. The video focuses on the prosperity and development of China despite Western assumptions that economic growth comes from democratic governments that encourage privately owned businesses. This video also referenced the success of China as a role model to developing countries in Africa through its rapid growth and continuing aid.
http://www.ted.com/talks/eric_x_li_a_tale_of_two_political_systems.html
The second video focuses on the growth of the Chinese and American governments and economies. China, contrary to popular connotations of the Chinese government, it functions well and constantly adapts to the new situations with different parts of the government unheard of the Americans. Although, the government was never "elected,"its ability to maintain both power and popularity has been overwhelming when compared to those of its democratic counterparts.
http://www.ted.com/talks/nirmalya_kumar_india_s_invisible_entrepreneurs.html
The final video that I watched was about the innovation and growth in India. The video focused on the ability of India to innovate and grow in India, instead of in the Western world. In an analysis of Silicon Valley and other large centers for innovation with multi-national companies, the speaker found that Indians took part in "invisible innovation." This meant that only the final product is used as a standard for consumers, which only recognized the visible innovation and final product, not the effort to organized and modernize and innovate that product while it was being designed.

Flipboard Review and Article Links
Today, I chose to make a Flipboard account and read eight articles rather than watch the movie or TED Talks. To be honest, I was very pleased with Flipboard's performance and its layout. Basically, once you create an account, you can "flip" interesting articles or videos into your own personal magazine, which may either be private or public. You can edit your magazine at any time or you can share it with other people (as I am doing now). Here is the link to the magazine I created today: http://flip.it/OWJVD
The first article I read was about the validity of Twitter accounts. One report says that up to 10% of all accounts are fake and that users can buy them for a small fee. This, according to the article, is a threat to small businesses who try legitimately to gain followers or market their product.
The second article I found relates to security issues linked to QuizUp, a very popular app on iOS right now. It states that hackers have recently intercepted full names, e-mails, and approximate locations of random users--and sent them to ordinary strangers! Not only does this represent the frail nature of our technological web, but it also cautions users to be wary before putting in too much personal information.
The third article details the fact that France recently sent 1,000 troops to the Central African Republic, a state that continues to struggle with poverty, rape, and famine.
The fourth article outlines secessionist desires of some Scots to claim their own land and break free from Britain. Similar to secessionist movements in Europe or in Africa, it will interesting to see how this movement ends up.
The fifth article is related to Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic church. He claims that, "unfettered capitalism is 'tyranny'" and condemns the rich who do not give back to the poor.
The sixth article was about how, despite sufficient credentials and outstanding academic performance, some students at Xinjiang University in China cannot graduate if their political views differ from the standard Communist values exuded from the state.
The seventh article outlines when Buddha was actually born and explains early monuments made in his honor.
The final article examines trends in Internet uses and created a very interesting infographic (check this article out!) that shows how interconnected we are to computers, tablets, and the Internet itself.
All in all, Flipboard is a very useful application that should not go unnoticed. Get this app if you can!
